If you’re missing this marketing trick, it will cost you endless leads…
How? Because it’s a key part of good marketing - Getting the attention of your ideal customer.
Because if you don’t, how will they buy?
Well after this article, you will have the power to hook in your ideal customer, and get them excited for what you have to tell them.
Not only that, but it’s something that 95% of businesses either don’t use, or they don’t use right.
It starts with identity
Imagine you’re at a busy train station, people pushing by and stimulus in every direction.
Disorientating chatter, Announcements through the tannoy, buskers busking…
Now let’s say there’s a specific person you’re trying to get the attention of and they’re far away.
How would you get their attention?
Most people would simply say to call out their name… They’re correct.
It’s basically guaranteed that it will get their attention, because you’re speaking directly to them.
Well, talking to your target audience is no different. To get your ideal customer's attention, you need to call out what they identify with.
That’s where something called a ‘headline’ comes into play.
Headlines aren't just reserved for the news you know...
It's what’s used to hook your audience in, and let them know that what you’re saying is indeed for them.
Headlines are used everywhere from ads, landing pages, websites (even emails with subject lines being a form of headline).
Hell, the reason you clicked on this article is because of a good headline, so you can see they’re important for garnering the attention you want.
The thing is, most businesses get this REALLY wrong… and it costs them so many leads that it’s scary.
So what’s the secret to actually writing powerful headlines that hook your reader? Let’s break it down now.
Step One: Know Your Audience.
To go back to the train station example, it’s going to be hard to get their attention if you don’t know who you’re talking to.
So, before you write your headline, or really anything at all, you must know exactly who that is.
For example, if you sell fancy cigars, you’re targeting people who like to smoke, probably like the finer things in life, most likely men aged 35+... you get the idea.
Go as far as to even create an “Avatar” of your ideal customer, get the ins and outs of who that person is (Name, age, interests etc…)
Once you figure that out, you can move on to the next step.
Step Two: What Do They Want?
Here, you just ask yourself - What problem do they want to solve?/What do they want?
For example, let’s say you’re a chiropractor. You might say something simple like this:
“Do you suffer from neck pain?”
Basic headline for a basic problem. But you can see how it peaks the interest of anyone in that category.
Maybe you sell a fitness program on how to get a killer six pack, something like:
“The quickest, easiest way to get killer abs and still eat whatever you want”
This one here has an extra little trick, “How to get X cool thing and still do Y thing you want”. Another variation is “How to get X cool thing WITHOUT Y uncool thing”.
Simple, yet very powerful stuff.
Step Three: Subhead
Now the final step in the basics of headlines is the subhead. This is used to amp up curiosity, and get them even more excited to learn more about what you’re offering.
Let’s take a look at a good headline + subhead vs a poorer performing example.
Let’s say that we’re a dating coach for this one.
Ineffective headline: Hi, I’m David Duke. I’m a professional dating coach for men based in London.
Ineffective subhead: Since 2009, I’ve been helping men with their dating lives. I love getting my clients good results and seeing them improve their confidence.
The problem here, although somewhat informative, is that it does very little to trigger the curiosity buttons in my brain, which is necessary to keep me wanting to read more and let the sales copy (The text on the page) do it's job (making the reader buy).
Good headline: The Seduction Secret I Discovered That Attracts Beautiful Women Into My Life
Good Subhead: That cute girl in the coffee shop, the stunner at the club that seems impossible to approach, that stylish chick walking down the street turning heads... Do you know how to pull these women into your world and make them yours?
Now, hopefully you see that the difference is night and day between these two examples, and how you can apply it to your own business for powerful results.
